- The Bayerteq Nabertherm Carbon Black Tester consists of:
-
-
- An aluminium frame
- A high-quality electric tube furnace, configurable depending on the selected standard.
-
- Testing Principle
- Carbon black content is determined gravimetrically, by measuring the weight difference before and after treatment.
- The process involves pyrolysis in a nitrogen stream, followed by oxidation of the carbon residue.
- Equipment Components
- Electric tube furnace:
- Heats the combustion pipe where the sample shuttle is inserted
- Front panel includes controls for operation and automatic temperature control
- Side panel supports:
- Flow meter
- Flow control valve
- Washing bottle
- Drying tube
- Electric tube furnace:
- Standards Compliance
- Complies with:
- ASTM D1603
- ISO 6964
- Suitable only for materials without non-volatile pigments or inorganic fillers
- Complies with:
- Test Procedure
- A sample of known weight is placed into a weighed combustion boat
- The sample is inserted into a 600°C tube furnace under a dry, oxygen-free nitrogen purge
- After a set duration:
- The combustion boat (with residue) is cooled under nitrogen and weighed
- Then placed into a 600°C muffle furnace to oxidize the carbon residue
- After full oxidation, the combustion boat is cooled again and weighed
- Carbon black content is calculated based on weight differences throughout the process
